Finding Home in Every Place We Go
For most people, home is a fixed place, four walls, a postcode, a familiar street.
For us, home has become something we carry within.
We’re a family of three, two grown-ups and one curious twelve-year-old explorer, and for the past few years, we’ve been living full-time as house and pet sitters. It wasn’t a decision we made overnight. It was born from a desire for freedom, a wish to live more simply, and a calling to experience life beyond routine.
When we first stepped into someone else’s home, it felt surreal. The trust they placed in us, the warmth of their animals greeting us like we already belonged, it was a kind of connection we hadn’t known before. Each sit since then has taught us something new: how to adapt quickly, how to see beauty in small details, how to live slowly and gratefully no matter where we are.
Over the years, we’ve found sits in all sorts of ways, through a mixture of platforms, community Facebook groups, word of mouth, and even through people who met us on our travels and later got in touch. Some homeowners heard about us through friends or family, and one lovely connection came from a simple conversation at a school playground that led to a long-term friendship. Every path seems to unfold naturally when you live in alignment with what you love, caring for homes, animals, and the trust placed in you.
We’ve cared for dogs who needed daily forest walks, cats who preferred quiet companionship, chickens with more personality than you’d expect, and gardens that felt like sacred spaces. We’ve watched sunsets in places we’d never even heard of a year before, shared stories with homeowners who’ve become dear friends, and seen our son learn more from nature and real life than he ever did from textbooks.
But it’s not just about the travel or the animals. It’s about trust. Every sit is built on an invisible thread of mutual respect, someone opening their doors, and us stepping through with care. It’s a quiet agreement that says, “I’ll look after what matters most to you, as if it were my own.”
People often ask if we ever get tired of moving. The truth is, it’s not the constant change that’s tiring, it’s what keeps us alive. Each new place brings a new rhythm. A different view from the window. A reminder that life can be simple, if you let it be.
Of course, it’s not without challenges. There are moments of packing and unpacking, long travel between sits, unexpected pet quirks, or the occasional leaky tap or blown lightbulb to sort out. But even those moments carry lessons in patience and presence. When you live this way, you learn to flow rather than force, to adapt rather than resist.
What’s surprised us most is how this lifestyle has deepened our sense of family. When you live without a fixed address, you learn to rely on each other fully, to be a team, to communicate, to grow together. Every sit becomes a shared story, another chapter in our ongoing adventure of “walking home”, not to a place, but to ourselves.
To us, being Guardians is not just a role. It’s a way of life. It’s choosing connection over convenience, presence over possession, and trust over transaction. It’s remembering that home isn’t always the house, sometimes it’s the heartbeat of a dog sleeping by your feet, the laughter of your child exploring a new garden, or the kindness of strangers who soon become friends.
We often say that each sit feels like an exchange of care, we give love and attention, and in return, we receive a deeper understanding of what it means to belong. Not to one place, but to life itself.
The Guardians Tribe was created from this same spirit, a space for people who value freedom, trust, and integrity. For those who know that looking after a home or a pet is about so much more than keeping things ticking, it’s about honouring the energy of a space and leaving it better than you found it.
For us, being Guardians isn’t just what we do. It’s who we are.
